Dr. Archer was born and raised in Cary, NC where she had a dream of playing basketball for North Carolina State University followed by attending their College of Veterinary Medicine. “As a kid, I was always drawn to animals. My mother tells stories of me befriending a llama at the petting zoo at 2 years old and trying to make friends with every stray cat possible at the daycare. As long as I can remember animals have filled my heart with joy. I spent most of my summers going to either basketball camp or horse camp.” As providence would have it, both dreams became a reality in her senior year of undergrad, when she walked onto the NCSU Women’s Basketball team and was accepted into the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Following graduation, Dr. Archer completed a rotating internship in equine medicine in Littleton, CO, before returning to Benson, NC to take a job in mixed animal practice working on horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, and the occasional camel or wallaby. In 2019, she married her husband, J.R., and moved to Florida where she was hired at a referral medicine hospital practicing on dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, rabbits, and rodents where she worked for 6 years. “In all of the different environments, I have had a special interest in surgery, preventative care, and compassionate end of life care. Surgery is a way to provide immediate solutions or relief to problems. Preventative care is crucial to keeping pets from getting sick. Compassionate end of life care is the last way we can love our best friends well before we help them pass over the rainbow bridge.”
Through the variety of experiences and species Dr. Archer has worked with over the years, she has come to especially appreciate the importance of teamwork and communication in veterinary medicine. “After having devoted a large portion of my early life to organized sports, I have come to realize that there are a lot of similarities between sports and veterinary medicine: the team thatcares for an animal is made up of the owner, the doctor, the doctor’s assistant and the technician. Each person on this team has a critical part to play in communication, problem solving, and execution of compassionate care, no matter what species is receiving that care. Each person is part of this team that works together to make sure our animals live the best lives they can. It brings me great joy to be a part of this team and I eagerly look forward to each opportunity to serve our pets and furry family members!”
Dr. Archer is married to her husband, J.R. They have a daughter, Sami, a son, Caleb, a Boston Terrier named Alfred, and a cat named Ms. Marvel. When not at work, Dr. Archer enjoys going on hikes and camping with her family, serving at her church, reading, and researching theological questions.
