PATIENT WARMING

Providing clinical warmth to your pet before, during and after surgery: Published research has correlated significant adverse consequences such as impaired wound healing, adverse cardiac events, altered drug metabolism, and coagulopathies with hypothermia. With prevention and management of hypothermia, patients also experience a greater level of comfort, and avoid postoperative shivering and the unpleasant sensation of feeling cold.

Thermostatically controlled passive warming medical devices are used at AMC for patient warming. One type is a water circulating blanket that is connected to a Gaymar pump shown on the right. The pump circulates warm water through the blanket. This system is placed under the patient during anesthesia to help maintain body temperature.

Another type of warming device is called the Hot Dog. This state-of-the-art technology warms by using a semi-conductive polymeric fabric that delivers safe and effective heat to the patient - no blowing air, no hot water. The Hot Dog controller delivers low voltage (48V DC) to the blankets, which warm by electrical resistance. The controller continuously monitors the resistance…maintaining the perfect temperature at all times. The blanket can be placed under, over or around the patient.

We also cover patients with towels, put socks on their feet, and use small hot water bottles as needed to help retain body heat. We even have a reflective blanket similar to space blanket in which they can recover and keep warm.

The adverse and costly outcomes associated with unintended hypothermia are well documented in human and veterinary patients. By providing warmth through temperature management control, we can prevent hypothermia in your pet-a serious complication in anesthetized pets.
