CANINE INFLUENZA
The canine influenza virus has been around since 2003 - we even had an outbreak in our clinic in 2007 - but the vaccine against it is relatively new. We are recommending that boarders get this vaccine. Two doses are required the first year, then an annual booster.
1. How long between the two vaccines?
Two to four weeks
2.
Is it required for boarding?
It is not required, but it is recommended.
3. Do they need both vaccines?
One vaccine might give some immunity, but it would not be as protective or as long lasting as the two dose series.
4. How contagious is Canine Influenza?
Virtually every dog that is exposed will become infected, and 10-20% may have a severe form.
5. How is it transmitted?
It is easily transmitted by direct contact, cough or sneeze, or via contaminated surfaces.
6. What are the symptoms?. How is it transmitted?
Coughing, sneezing, fever, eye and nasal discharge. Up to 8% may develop pneumonia.
7. Are there any side-effects?
In a study of 746 dogs vaccinated, there were no side effects. We have not detected any side effects in the dogs we have vaccinated.
